Did You Know? Magnets aren’t just for attracting iron, steel, nickel, or cobalt—they have many magical properties and uses! Today, we’ll reveal some fascinating facts about magnets that will give you a whole new perspective on this remarkable material.
1. Two Basic Types of Magnets
Magnets fall into two main categories:
Permanent Magnets: These are the most common type, such as natural lodestones (magnetite) or artificial magnets (alnico alloys). Permanent magnets retain their magnetism indefinitely and aren’t affected by time or external conditions. They’re used in toys, tools, decorations, and more.
Non-Permanent Magnets: These only exhibit magnetism when exposed to an external magnetic field (usually from an electric current). Once the field is removed, they lose their magnetism. Made from iron, cobalt, or similar materials, they’re widely used in electromagnets, maglev trains, and industrial applications.
2. The Principle of Magnetism
Magnetic interactions remain a profound topic in physics, and no fully satisfying explanation exists yet. One theory, based on quantum electrodynamics (QED), suggests that magnets attract or repel each other by exchanging virtual photons (invisible particles of light). These photons transfer momentum, much like the recoil you feel when throwing a rubber ball. If two magnets have the same polarity, they 'throw the ball' and repel each other; if their polarities are opposite, they 'pull the ball' and attract.
3. Magnets and Relativity
Einstein’s theory of relativity describes how spacetime and matter interact. When an object approaches the speed of light, its length, mass, and time all change. These changes alter charge distributions and current intensities, generating magnetic fields. For example:
A charged particle moving at a constant speed in a vacuum produces only an electric field.
However, if observed from a different reference frame (i.e., a different relative speed), its charge density and current intensity appear altered, creating a detectable magnetic field.
